There’s still a lot of confusion around chemical injectors. A lot of contractors run them wrong every single day and wonder why performance is off or why the injector keeps failing.
This is Part 1 of a short series breaking down exactly how a downstream injector works and the common mistakes that kill performance.
The basics:
A typical brass chemical injector (like the General Pump style) has:
- Quick connects so you can pull it in and out of the system
- An interchangeable orifice so you can match it to your machine
- A clear flow direction (follow the arrow)
Water from the pump comes in one side, passes through the orifice, and goes out toward your hose reel or gun. When you drop a hose into chemical and put on a low-pressure tip (soap tip, foamer, M5-style, etc.), the injector draws chemical through the nipple.

Important points most people get wrong:
- You cannot adjust the ratio. An 80/20 injector pulls roughly 80% water and 20% chemical. A 90/10 does the same at a different ratio. There is no dial or adjustment. It’s fixed by the orifice size.
- It only draws with a low-pressure tip. High-pressure tips, turbo nozzles, and surface cleaners create enough back pressure that the injector stops pulling. That’s by design.
- Leaving the injector in line during high-pressure work is a big mistake. All that water is trying to squeeze through a small orifice. You’re choking flow, adding strain, and wasting time. If you don’t have a bypass system, pull the injector out and put a jumper hose in its place when you’re surface cleaning or using high pressure.
- Orientation matters. The arrow has to point downstream. Flip it and it will never draw properly.
- Rinsing is critical. Chemical sits trapped in the injector after you switch to a high-pressure tip. The only way to flush it is to put the drop tube into clean water or neutralizer and run a low-pressure tip again. Do this after every job. Brass injectors especially need it if you want them to last.
- Water AND chemical are flowing through the injector at all times. The injector functions by creating a "vacuum" effect pulling whatever is connected to the nipple and infusing it with the water already going through the large orifice of the injector.
Pro tip we use in the field: After the job, disconnect the output side of the injector. Drop the chemical line into water or neutralizer and let low-pressure water flow while you reel hoses and talk to the customer. It rinses itself without you standing there watching it.
