IGX800 High Pressure Fuel Pump Issues

 

The Honda IGX800 is a strong engine when fuel delivery is solid. When it’s not, it can leave you stuck on a job chasing ghosts.

We had one come in with 1,900 hours and wouldn’t start. We walked through the full diagnosis and replacement so you can skip the guessing.

What we saw:

  • Engine wouldn’t fire / start struggling while attempting
  • Weak fuel delivery on the low pressure side
  • Weak fuel delivery on the high-pressure side

What we checked first:

  • Battery (bad — replaced it)
  • Oil level (low — topped off)
  • Fuel filter (restricted — replaced it)

Still no change. After looking at fuel pressure, that pointed straight to the high-pressure fuel pump.

When we tested output, it was only dripping fuel about once every five seconds. Dead pump.

Quick field tip: A light spray of starting fluid (brake cleaner) into the intake will confirm if the engine is starved for fuel. Assuming all other vitals are good. Use it carefully, but it works.

How we replaced it:

Tools needed:

  • 10 mm sockets/wrench
  • Drill
  • Snips
  • Crimp clamps (we used an 11.3 mm on the injector line)
  • Pick or flathead
  • Zip ties

The pump sits behind the oil cooler. Remove the two 10 mm bolts holding the pump, then the four bolts holding the bracket. Disconnect the fuel lines carefully — the clamps get brittle with age.

The new pump comes with an adapter that plugs into the OEM harness. Reconnect the lines, get the clamp snug (not crushed), reinstall the bracket and oil cooler, and hand-thread the bolts first so you don’t cross-thread the plastic.

Fired it up and it idled perfect.

These EFI systems are picky about fuel pressure. If your IGX800 is running poorly or won’t start and you’ve already ruled out battery, oil, and filter, check the high-pressure pump before throwing more parts at it.
