What is a Downstream Injector (Part 3)

Parts 1 and 2 covered how a basic injector works and how a 3-way valve cleans up chemical switching. This is Part 3 — where we put the two together with an electric downstream bypass for the most efficient setup we run.

The limitation of a 3-way only system:

A 3-way valve lets you select bleach or water, but the water still has to pass through the injector orifice. That restriction hurts flow when you’re surface cleaning, turboing, or working at longer distances.

What the electric bypass adds:

The electric downstream bypass has an actuated ball valve.

  • Open position = path of least resistance. Water shoots straight through for maximum volume.
  • Closed position = water is forced through the injector so it can pull chemical.

You control it from a remote (or the switch on the unit itself). Press a button from the back of the house, 300 feet away, and it switches in about 10–15 seconds. No walking back to the trailer.

How the full system works together:

  1. 3-way valve selects bleach or water
  2. Electric bypass decides whether the flow goes through the injector or bypasses it
  3. Remote control lets you switch modes without leaving the work area

At the end of the job you still rinse the injector the right way: set the 3-way to water, activate the chemical/mix mode so flow is forced through the injector, and flush it clean.

Why we run this setup:

  • Full flow when you need volume
  • Clean chemical application when you need it
  • Remote control instead of walking back and forth
  • Manual switch on the unit as a backup if the remote dies
  • Longer injector life and fewer field issues

I’ve personally installed more than 15 of these systems. We moved to this combination because the components are higher quality, the mounting is cleaner, and it just causes fewer problems on the job.
